Happy New Year!

This year being in our new location was so much fun – even though we’re ‘tea-shop partners’, we usually don’t see much of one another, so it was super to work, and to visit with and serve all our fantastic customers together! All of you were kind and generous, with lots of encouragement, smiles and patience – we had loads of fun, we are VERY GRATEFUL and we appreciate all of you.

In September we achieved ‘five years in business’ and we’re VERY happy to tell you what’s been accomplished – together with YOU – over the last five years. As you know, our reason for opening the shop was to support children’s charities and, to that end, we’ve been very successful.

IMG_2389In fact, we’ve sent $13,939.67 – mostly to Colombia (a few hundred dollars has gone to China) and $3,243.00 has gone to local charities, schools and causes. In addition, many local public schools have used our program to raise funds for their needs. ALL OF THIS IS BECAUSE OF ALL OF YOU.

As many of you know, Yolanda has a Foundation in Colombia that supports AIDs families. A huge thank you goes to Yolanda’s associate Diego, who administers all the work there – out of the goodness of his heart – which enables ALL funds to go directly to those who need help, with the exception of the small cost to actually send the money there. (We have all the receipts if you’d like to see them).

We continue to purchase groceries for Grandma and her four grandchildren, nine widows have been set up with a business – without the help, most would have been forced into prostitution to support their families, we’ve purchased a wheelchair for a 16 year old, bunk beds for a family whose children were getting too old to sleep together and we had the floor fixed in one home.

Every Christmas we’ve provided a fun day for all the families in the Foundation. On that day, everyone has three meals (that only happens on this one day a year), the children receive gifts of clothes and school supplies and the families receive groceries. In our last message we let you know about the washing machine we’re saving for – we haven’t yet reached our goal yet but we will.

Our hours of operation are back to 9:30 to 5:00 – six days a week. Remember our tea doesn’t contain any artificial flavoring and all of it is delicious iced – it won’t be long before that sounds good. We hope to see you soon.

What We Do

Chari-Teas was opened in September 2010 to provide assistance to children in need. Our focus is in the city of Armenia, Colombia, where we have been helping families who are struggling with AIDS.

Since February, 2010 we have been buying groceries for Grandma and her four grandchildren (three of whom are HIV positive), because when Dad passed away they were left without an income. (There is no assistance from the government).  We’ve also set five women up in business, purchased a wheelchair for a 16 year old boy,  bunk beds for a woman whose children had only one bed to share (they were getting too old to be doing that), supplied the necessary extras to an eleven year old girl with terminal liver cancer (sadly she has since passed away), school supplies and clothes for many children and extra groceries and financial help to as many families as we can.

Recently Yolanda went to Colombia to visit and she was reaquainted with her friend Eucaris (a sweet, very tiny 72 year old lady).  Eucaris began taking seniors off the street many years ago (there is no assistance from the government) and she currently looks after 85 seniors! About ten years ago, the government built a building for Eucaris and her ‘family’ – for which everyone is grateful – but……… volunteers are doing all that laundry by hand!  So, we are currently working toward the goal of providing a washing machine.  We have $1,810. in the bank and we were quite pleased because that would have paid for a commercial machine.  However, we’ve been informed that a commercial machine would only last for a few months and that the job requires an industrial machine so………that means we need an additional $4,000!

We are EXTREMELY GRATEFUL – none of this could be done without our fantastic and generous customers!!! There’s a great big teapot on the table to collect change from anyone who wants to help. When you come in, we have pictures and receipts for you to see.

A GREAT BIG THANKS to you all!

Changing Lives In A Positive Way

Ethical treatment for the workers – as a company, we deal with suppliers who conduct numerous visits to the tea estates to ensure they are working in an environmentally and socially sound manner by promoting fair and ethical treatment of all who participate in bringing tea from the plant to your cup.

Willow Blend and Arthritis or Muscle Pain

We’ve got good news!!!!!!!

Are you hurting from arthritis or muscle pain? (Who isn’t?) Let me tell you a little story.

Some of you may not know that Yolanda practised as a dentist in Colombia for 25 years -before she moved to Canada. In Colombia, just like in Canada, medical/dental professionals are educated in the pharmaceutical way of dealing with pain. Taking acetaminophen and ibuprophen are what we’ve all been led to believe are our best alternatives BUT……….

A few weeks ago Yolanda started taking our Willow Blend tea because the pain in her legs and knees had become so bad she was limited in what shoes she could wear and how far she could walk- she was hurting all the time. Well, she was WOWED and AMAZED and wouldn’t have believed it if it hadn’t happened to her. She is moving pain free and has just come back from a trip to Israel where she was able to walk around and enjoy her holiday with her husband. Yeah! How nice to have an alternative to drugs that actually works!

Remember, Willow Blend tea – which you drink three times a day before meals – doesn’t work immediately. Like all natural ‘medicines’ it takes a while – so – if you start on it, give it a week or so before you see the results. Then, if you’re doubting that it’s helping, stop – you’ll be back on it immediately!

Cast Iron Tea Pots

How to Care For Cast Iron Teapots

Cash iron teapots were created in ancient China. They were then adopted and further developed by the Japanese into practical, as well as decorative, handicraft items. They symbolize the everlasting strength and unity of the world.

Through special chemical treatments, impurities are removed from the cast iron during the production process. A coating of misty black enamel is then applied to help prevent the development of rust. As water is boiled, trace amounts of iron in the water from the teapot provides an iron supplement that contributes to human health. (Small pots should only be used to serve tea. They should not be used to boil water directly.)

Cast Iron TeapotInstructions for use:
1. Before using, pour a pot of boiling water into the pot – and then pour it out.
2. After each use, make sure the entire pot is clean and dry to prevent the development
of rust. We recommend tea not be kept in the pot overnight.
3. In the event of rust, the pot can still be used. After cleaning the rusted area with a soft
brush, boil used teabags or tea leaves. The tannic acid from the tea will naturally
react with the iron, producing a black seal, covering the rust area. This will also
prevent the recurrence of rust. The rust from the pot is non-toxic, so it is safe to use.
4. Store in a cool, dry place. It can also be put on display to evoke moods of China!!

Watch for Our New Line of Bone China

Group of Seven MugsIn June our new line of bone china, “Canadian Masters” became available!

The mugs feature the work of great Canadian and international Artists. Featured here are four mugs showing paintings by famous Canadian painter Tom Thomson.

Tom was a prolific painter and became famous for his paintings around Algonquin Park in Ontario. His brilliant career was cut short when he drowned while canoeing in the lake in 1917.

This has always been considered a mystery since he was an experienced outdoorsman and was a Park Guide. You can now consider the beauty of the paintings of Tom Thomson while enjoying a delicious cup of tea.

Rooibos Tea and its Qualiteas!!

Hellllloooooo everyone!

Wow! What a super-duper summer we’ve been having – so good it‘s making up for the last two years!

rooibos teaI hope you’re sampling our tea when you pass by the store – if the weather’s hot we usually have something iced for you to try. We’ve been doing lots of rooibos combined with fruit tea – so you can give it to your children – all made with just a little bit of ginger ale – cause we like bubbles!

We have some rather sad news – did you know that if you put milk (yes, sorry, that includes cream) into your tea, you lose all the antioxidant value. Seems the caseins in milk decrease the catechins in the tea.

Bad, bad news for some of you….but the good news is that you can always use almond or coconut milk.

Happy tea-drinking

The Goodness of Rooibos
(pronounced Roy-boss, which means red bush in Afrikaans)

Rooibos has anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagen, anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity. It’s full of vitamins and minerals, and contains similar amounts of antioxidants as tea
Naturally caffeine-free
Helps build strong teeth and bones
Contains alpha hydroxide acid, good for the skin
Helps relieve stomach ulcers, nausea, constipation and heartburn
Prescribed for nervous tension and mild depression – it makes a relaxing sedative
Mix with breast milk or formula to pacify infants with colic, stomach cramps & sleeping problems
Restores the body’s equilibrium after strenuous exercise because of its mineral content
Apply directly to the skin to help with acne, eczema and sunburn
Increases the absorption of iron in the body
Helps recovery from a hangover
Aids with insomnia

Rooibos contains a mimic enzyme “Super Oxide Dismantle” S.O.D.- an antioxidant that attacks free radicals to limit their damaging effects; thus delaying the aging process.

Rooibos is less bitter than most teas – drink it hot or cold, with or without milk, sugar, honey or lemon or mix it with fruit juices. For added flavour and nutrition, use for the liquid portion in recipes for soups, marinades, sauces, stews, cakes etc.

200 ml (7 oz/1 cup) of brewed Rooibos contains the following nutrients:
